Lehigh Culture & Community

The semester has officially started, and as we’re all busy greeting old friends and making new ones (and frantically finishing syllabi), here’s a list of things we can do this month together!

Annual Lehigh / Community Expo will be held today, Monday, August 29 from 4:00-6:00 pm on the University Center Lawn. It’s a great place to get a feel for what the community and Lehigh has to offer in terms of culture, food, and club activities.

Tuesdays @ 10 at Packer House are a great way to get to know fellow graduate students across the colleges and disciplines, and who doesn’t like free breakfast?

On Wednesday, August 30 at 4:10 pm we will have our first department meeting of the semester. Lots of exciting changes, events, and projects are happening and will be discussed.

Every Thursday, the Bethlehem Farmers’ Market happens down in Farrington Square. It’s a great place to grab fresh fruit and vegetables or just a lunch from one of the many food trucks or stalls.

On Friday, September 3 at 12:10 pm, the Graduate Student Meeting will be held in Drown 210. We will begin the elections, talk about what’s to come this semester and of course begin the process of finding a new co-editor for this very blog!

Excitingly we have Bich Minh Nguyen slated to come talk on Tuesday, September 6 at 7:30 pm. As part of the Notations series, this lecture will occur in the Zoellner Arts Center. Nguyen authored the memoir Stealing Buddha’s Dinner, one of the books chosen for the Office of First Year Experience’s Summer Reading program for freshmen. Check it out and definitely encourage your students to do so as well!

Women’s Exchange is a great space for graduate student women to get together, have lunch, and connect. Happening every other Thursday in Packer House, the first one is September 8 at 12:00 pm and lunch is provided. Just make sure to fill out this  form as space is limited. Thanks to Joanna for the tip!

The Graduate Life Office is doing a great series of events in conjunction with the OISS to help new graduate students adjust to coursework and grad life down at Packer House. On September 9 from 2-4 pm they will run their Peak Performance: Mind and Body segment emphasizing the importance of fitness, health, and diet, where smoothies will be provided. On September 16 from 2-4 pm, they will have a session on Community Connections detailing local and community programs that can impact and assist you in Bethlehem and sugar cake will be served. On September 23 from 2-4 pm they will host Surviving and Thriving Academically which will offer some great advice on time management and making the most of the opportunities available as a graduate student and offer “brain food” as refreshment.

The notations series will be presenting Beth Brandt, poetry & Amy Forsyth, music on September 29 at 7:00 pm in the Zoellner Arts Galley which is paired with the exhibition, Bartram Boxes Remix in the Zoellner Arts Center’s galley which opens August 31 and will run through December.
